Jemaa el-Fna is the legendary main square of Marrakech and the pulsing centre of the old medina. By day it hums with orange-juice carts, storytellers, henna artists and snake charmers; as the sun sets it transforms into the largest open-air restaurant in Morocco — dozens of numbered food stalls firing up grills of brochettes and merguez, steaming bowls of harira soup, snail broth and freshly fried fish.
UNESCO proclaimed Jemaa el-Fna a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001, recognising its living tradition of Halqa street performance and communal dining. It remains the beating heart of the city and the natural starting point for any food adventure in Marrakech.
Around the square, rooftop terraces serve mint tea and tagines with sweeping views over the Koutoubia minaret, while the surrounding medina lanes hide riad dining rooms, traditional Moroccan houses and casual cafes — nearly all within a few minutes' walk of the square itself.
